We take the liberty of requesting Your High Honors' favorable consideration for these petitioners as well as for three others, namely the soldiers Diederik Kloppenburg, Gotlob Kriegel, and Mattheus Deles, who have already served for some time to satisfaction in the clerical offices and humbly petition Your High Honors to be permitted to continue in the writing service with the grant of assistant board money, they being indispensable for keeping the clerical work in order. Furthermore, on 19 May last, on the occasion of the appointment then made of two quartermasters as Pilots in the place of the deceased George Christoffel Herlits and Jan Grim, we declared the post of Boatswain on the sloops, hitherto always performed by a sailor, to be an active post, and agreed to grant those who are deemed qualified for it ƒ 14.- per month from the day of their appointment, since otherwise, according to the assurance given to the Director by the then interim Master of the Equipage Van der Stam, no one was willing to undertake it, and one cannot well manage without such a person, and moreover it is necessary that along the way one has some trainee at hand in order to be able to advance to Pilots in due time, a matter of too great importance to the Company for one not to attend to it in time, wherefore we also very humbly request that this, and the further reasons cited more extensively in the resolution itself, may merit Your High Honors' honored approval. month, have granted the pay belonging to the first-mentioned rank of ƒ 20 per month, regarding which the less difficulty arose, since during the committee held by Your Right Noblenesses concerning the second memorial left behind by the late Honorable Mr. Taillefert /:L: M:: /, as shown by secret resolution taken in the Council of the Indies on the 2nd of July 1764, the retention of forty artillerymen, officers and common ranks, thus also including two bombardiers, is permitted. Other or further improvements and appointments have not occurred, neither on land nor on the respective ships, that appear to require special or further citation herein, so that we respectfully refer in this regard to our resolutions dated 4 and 28 April, 14 and 20 October, 11 and 23 December of last year, 12 February and the first of March of this year, item the copies of the acts, which have already been sent previously by the ship Het Huys ten Donk, and now are sent under the annexes hereof up to the present date. To a certain native cook by the name of Marten de Kuit, who, according to an attestation entered by resolution of the 12th of June, departed in the year 1765 with the deponents on the sloop De Troon Prins to Batavia, and had been engaged in service here by the late Master of the Equipage Lucas Zuijdland, without having received, as far as was known to the deponents, more than four months' advance wages, we have, upon the request made for that purpose, ordered paid out of the treasury the arrears of monthly pay, or that which was still due to him since his departure from Bengal and after deduction of what was received in advance until his return here at ƒ 9 per month. On the 4th of this month, upon the complaints made to the Director concerning the insolent and bad conduct of the Junior Assistant Henrik Jurriaan Zuidland, we had resolved to send him, as a dangerous individual, to Batavia with written-off wages, and to have him cross over on the ship Popkensburg, which was dispatched that day. But notwithstanding that he was confined within the factory by order of the first undersigned, he nevertheless managed to evade the execution of the aforesaid resolution by absenting himself from the service of the Company, so that proceedings are now to be taken against him as a deserter. Finally, based on two statements reviewed in the session of the 15th of this month, namely one from the skipper of the ship Het Huys ten Donk and one from the Chief and Assistant Surgeon in the hospital, it was resolved to grant the sailor Evert Carel, who had been assigned to the said vessel and who, while giving a salute on the occasion of the solemn presentation of His Serene Highness, was injured in the right hand by the premature discharge of one of the cannons, in such a manner that after healing it remained paralyzed and maimed, the compensation established therefor of six hundred guilders, and moreover to retain him here in the hospital as an assistant to the present sick-father, who during the shipping season, when there are 300 and sometimes more heads lying in the hospital, is not capable alone of maintaining order among the people. For the pensioners to whom Your Right Noblenesses have been pleased to grant the continuation of their retirement pay, we hereby express their humble thanks, and again request an equal favor. Also, the vessels dispatched from here are scattered in all directions, and those which were dispatched with water as much as a month ago were not on board until now and one had no prospect yet to expect them, because they had had it so severe down river that the ship itself does not appear to have been out of danger, considering the chief mate declared to him, van Braam, that for virtually three days and nights he had not been away from the compass; and above all this, one of the English ships that still had to go to Europe had to put back inward again, lying at present at Culpee, otherwise Dover, where it apparently will also have to remain for the present. The Right Honourable Director and the Members having been called together again today in the cloth hall to inspect various sorted linens for the Fatherland and some for India on the requisition for the current year, it was resolved and agreed after the completion of that work to record hereby that no changes have been made in the contract prices in the sorting for the Netherlands, except for the third sort of the ordinary plain Gingam de olmara, which in comparison with the sample was found to be of very poor quality, and on that account has been reduced in price by four anna current or 5 5/9 stuivers per piece; furthermore, that the solagesjes de mohumpoer ditto 24 cubits 2 covid, contracted for against No. 6: 5:- or f 7:— the piece, have been rejected on account of their poor quality and returned to the supplier, because, although the meeting is assured of the impossibility of obtaining better goods than what has been seen in proportion to the aforementioned price, it would nevertheless not be suitable to ship the same, although for the reason just mentioned the supplier cannot be blamed for it turning out no better, as he has in any case fulfilled his duty to procure linens of the required quality for the Company if possible, and appeals to the circumstances of the times, which currently require one to give way more than ever. Appeared before me, Fredrik Thott, sworn clerk of the Bengal Secretariat, in the presence of the witnesses to be named hereinafter, Valentein Teklij, pilot on the River Ganges, who, at the requisition of the valiant Pieter Clement, captain on the Company's ship Scholtenburg, and in support of the truth, declared that when the ship Scholtenburg ran aground in the Sennegat on the 22nd of September last, the aforementioned captain caused the goods mentioned in a declaration signed by the ship's officers on the aforementioned date to be cast overboard in order to lighten the ship as much as possible, but that thereafter, seeing there was no longer any danger, nothing more was jettisoned.
