Honourable Sir and Sirs, We have received your letters of the 30th ultimo and 4th instant, and have applied to the Mayor's Court for particulars regarding the attachment of the goods which you mention in the former. With respect to the latter advising us of Mr. Stewart's conduct, we are not able to reply to it now as the depositions enclosed therein are so very voluminous, we have not as yet been able to get them translated. Having procured a larger quantity of saltpetre than we expected this season, we find ourselves enabled to furnish you with a further supply of that article, and therefore request you will inform us how much more you have occasion for, and whether it will be agreeable to you to receive it down here, as our final dispatch is now on its way from Patna. Nawab and being entirely outside the Raja's jurisdiction, he could not well extend his inquiry so far as to be able to discover to which of these three districts the persons who might have committed this outrage belonged. In order, however, that all possible means might be employed to discover the murderers, and that Your Honours might be given all satisfaction, we have, in accordance with Your Honours' request, written to our Resident at the Durbar, desiring him to request the government at Murshidabad to issue an order to arrest, within their jurisdiction, all persons suspected of having a share in this matter. We must also request permission, Gentlemen, on this occasion to remark that the inquiry into this case shows that the guard sent with this treasure was not sufficient to protect it, and that two other separate sums of money from your colony have since passed which were also provided with such an insufficient guard as the one in question; wherefore the Raja requests that Your Honours will in future on such occasions increase their escorts, which will probably prevent such misfortunes, as Your Honours must be convinced how unjust it would be that a province should be charged with a loss that could so easily have been prevented merely by employing this proper precaution. but the other was almost entirely unknown as a hireling. These people were also met and seen with the money, one and a quarter kos west of Goeraal (where the wayfaring man is accustomed to pass the night), that same day in the afternoon at three quarters, by a peon of the saraat Naiandé named Sjerik Kalé, being on his way from here to Berdewaar; and he, Modvanziel, had subsequently received a letter from the aforementioned Baraal, wherein he wrote to him that the aforementioned sum had been dispatched on the 25th of the current month, but that nothing of its receipt had yet appeared to him. He had thereupon sent out two gomastas and a wakil to look for the people, and these, finding nothing along the way, had proceeded as far as Keussen Neggen, where the matter was subsequently reported to Your Honours' Resident Mr. Grakam, who thereupon immediately sent some of his people to make inquiries into what happened, and finally that by the servants of Mr. Grakam, upon their arrival at the hamlet of Paans Senmtiak, the five persons who carried the money were found murdered in a tank or pond, as can all be seen in detail from the account thereof drawn up in Persian, which we annex hereto for consideration. We have deemed it necessary to bring this case before Your Honours, and to request that justice may be done to the wronged party, and that he may be indemnified with respect to his loss by those who have been appointed everywhere in Bedewaen on that account to take care that no wrong is done to anyone. We think ourselves so much the more justified thereto, if Your Honours will please reflect, firstly upon the tribute demanded of us in the past year in the districts of Bedewaan and Sjenderona, and secondly upon what Your Honours' President, the Honourable Mr. Verelst, made known to the Director Mr. Vernet by a separate letter of 4 December 1767: namely, that these duties have from ancient times been levied for the maintenance of the servants whom the zamindars kept there for the protection of the merchants trading in those lands, and to enable the zamindars to answer for the thefts committed in their territories. We have found ourselves honoured with Your Honours' missive of the 26th of the last-passed month, in answer to which we express to Your Honours our obligation for the trouble which you have been pleased to have taken to discover the murder and theft committed upon servants of one of our dependents, in the district of Berduwen, and regarding which we addressed ourselves to Your Honours by missive of 20 June last. However, since this inquiry has not had the desired effect, and Your Honours inform us that the deed was committed at a place dependent on Morsidabaad and consequently outside the jurisdiction of the Raja of Berdewaen, we shall likewise, through our chief and Council at Kassembazaer, have justice requested from the Nawab. Meanwhile thanking Your Honours, 927 Gentlemen, for the orders given in this regard to your Resident at the Durbar. We shall also henceforth, in accordance with Your Honours' indication, as far as it depends on us and is in our power, take care to provide the cash with sufficient escorts on such occasions: the money that suffered this unfortunate fate having come here from the side of Berdewaan, and having been for the account of one of our inhabitants, whose agent certainly will have proceeded according to former custom, and had no notice of the insecurity in those surroundings. On this occasion we also take the liberty to request an answer to the letter which we had the honour to write to Your Honours on the 1st of this month, and especially to be allowed to know how large our share in the saltpetre for this year will fall, in order to be able to regulate our ships accordingly for the rapidly approaching dispatch. Here is the fact in a few words. In 1758, on the 9th of September, the Sieur Massonnie, being off the latitude of Masulipatnam, was surprised and captured by a Dutch vessel under the flag of the States. The vessel had sailed from Batavia with the passport of the General and the said flag. The Sieur Marsouin, having been detained prisoner at Calcutta, was unable to travel until the 28th of November of the same year to Frederiksnagore to make the declaration to the Sieur de Noual, Clerk of the French nation who had taken refuge in this Danish factory. The demands of our Company and the difficulties of trade, which prevent us from fulfilling them, have obliged us to stop on its account all merchandise manufactured in its colony, and we have pushed this exactitude to the point of prohibiting this branch of trade to all private individuals and even to the servants of the Company. You cannot therefore find it wrong, Messieurs, that we take, in consequence of this regulation, all the precautions necessary so that none of it leaves in the future. The Colony belonging to the Company, it is just that it alone should reap the fruits of it; for the rest, if you are owed any balances of advances that you may have previously made, you may, Messieurs, provide us with the account of each weaver, and we will do our best to ensure you are paid. of Mr. Marsouin, and of his brigantine, which he took to Calcutta and sold there along with all the merchandise; Mr. Marsouin, having been detained as a prisoner in Calcutta, could not proceed to Frederiksnagore before 28 November of last year to make his declaration before Mr. Naccal, registrar of the French nation, who had taken refuge at that Danish factory; this declaration was made in the presence of Messrs. Ferrier and Mitard, who were also witnesses to that made by the ship's crew on the 1st of December following, and on the 9th of the same month Mr. Marsouin went to Chinsurah and delivered the copies of the aforementioned declarations and his complaint to Mr. Bisdom, Director-General at Chinsurah, and to the gentlemen of the Council and the Fiscal jointly. Upon this complaint, made to those who undoubtedly thought they ought not to concern themselves with it, we request a prompt reply so that we, as is our duty, may render an account to the representatives of the complainant regarding what they may hope to receive. Mr. Marsouin died in misfortune, sacrificed to the deceit of an enemy, all the more grievously as he should not have endured it from him. That the ship which took the brigantine of Mr. Marsouin bore the name of Greyhound and belonged to the English. That all the Europeans of its crew were English. That in the beginning of the year 1758 it departed from Calcutta, provided with a pass from Governor Drake. That upon its departure from there, one James Duff, an inhabitant of Calcutta, held the command of that vessel. That in the month of May of the same year it arrived in the Batavia roads. That the said J: Duff fruitlessly requested permission to be allowed to sell his goods at Batavia. That a ship lay beside him as a guard ship; That for that reason he departed from the Batavia roads the following day. That a few days after his departure from the said roads he came to pass away. That after his death the command was assumed by the Down mentioned in the petition of Mr. Marsouin.
