of the number of Dallaels who are employed in the service of the Company, and for the rest referred us to the orders that had been given to him provisionally by the Director for the execution of matters, while we at the same time demanded a report from him whether the 40,000 rupees, which according to what was recorded by resolution of the first of the current month were sent thither in advance by the first undersigned in order to make the work progress, and with which will be continued on an ongoing basis as the interest of the Company shall come to require, had arrived safely. By a letter received from him under date of the 14th of the current month, he communicates the receipt of the separate letter from the Director, and how he, pursuant thereto, immediately went to the English Chief mentioned here and, on behalf of His Excellency and the Company, made an opening of the decision taken by us, with a request to offer him a helping hand and to allow the Company the necessary servants, just as was already the case with respect to the French. That this gentleman not only granted him this, but made a promise of his assistance, insofar as that would be in his power. That he had also communicated this to the French Resident and sent the Company's Vakil to the Nawab Jaffar Ali Khan and his Dewan Mitter Seep, and had also made this known to those gentlemen while presenting the customary sight gifts, namely for the first-named of one gold and five silver rupees, as well as to the other of five silver rupees, or in total f 39.-.-; who, as he further writes, received this with pleasure and had let him know that he could be assured of their goodwill, while the Lord Nawab had let him know in particular that, if our trade should suffer any hindrance, he should immediately inform His Honour thereof, as he would then help him to the best of his ability, leaving for the rest no doubt of a desired outcome, and requesting the necessary instructions, samples, and cash, with further communication that he was not yet able to send a list of the Dallaels, weavers, and other servants; item that the escort of soldiers with which the aforementioned money was sent had arrived, but that those coins had not yet been checked; finally, that since the execution of the commission would be somewhat difficult for him alone, another of the Company's servants might be sent for his assistance, to help promote the Company's interest in case of illness as well as otherwise. Deliberating on all this on the 19th following, we considered all the aforesaid actions as well done, and found nothing to be done regarding his request for orders and cash, on the grounds that provision had already been made against that, though as it seems it had not yet come to his knowledge at that time. But regarding the last matter, namely to have another of the Company's servants for assistance, it was remarked by us that there appeared to reside no necessity therein, but rather, for the reasons cited in the resolution, to make a change regarding the person himself who should henceforth remain there, for which purpose the Junior Merchant and Second Warehouse Keeper Jan Rauwertz has been kept in view, to remain posted there alone henceforth, under the name of Factor, which we believe, as being in accordance with the interest of the Company, will not be disapproved of by Your High Nobilities; and to which end we shall further cite the necessary application and the further arrangements regarding the warehouses under his own title. We could wish on this occasion to also be able to supply Your High Nobilities with some information regarding the contracting to be made for linens at these offices, on the European and Indian demands for the current year, but the prospect that we have regarding a more advantageous appearance than in the past year is, to our regret, very small, as the goods are becoming dearer, so to speak, day by day, and our suppliers do not cease complaining about the losses they must suffer in the Company's service, especially now that torn and defective pieces are made of the linens at proportionally reduced prices; against which they even complained in writing at the session of the 10th of February, and made known that this was a point which in time would completely ruin them, with the request that we would provide therein and pay heed to the revolution of the times.

May we be permitted to add here that this lamentable decline is not only experienced by our Company, but that the French (as is further confirmed by our secret letter of today) are likewise subject to it, since, according to the own declaration of their present Director, Mr. Chevalier, they have been palmed off with rubbish. already some pieces were ready, which were shortly to arrive, and the servants, in order to be informed in time of what could be expected from this trade for this year, had also dispatched him back to the quarters in order to inquire after the prices and prospects of the harvest, and they meanwhile requested our permission to make some reasonable advances to him as he reduced his debt, in order thereby to enable him to come to market on an equal footing with others, at the same time pointing out that the entire collection for Ao 1767 had consisted of 25800 pieces, or 752 pieces more than the year before, and that, although the superiority of the English and the means they employ to appropriate everything to themselves were matters that they deemed superfluous to adduce as reasons why, in this 353 this point, one had not been able to succeed according to wish, they nevertheless maintained that their duty required bringing the same further to our attention, and regarding those impediments as the sole reasons why an adequate quantity of linen could not be obtained. Furthermore, in accordance with the orders, we are currently forwarding the answered Fatherland Demand for the year 1767 determined in Amsterdam on the 14 8ber 1765 as it was summarized and approved at our meeting of the 11 hujus. Having at present nothing to report regarding the Silk and silk Fabrics, unless it should merely be a repetition of our resolution of the 26th of January last, regarding the procurement from Pattena of the soap required for the washing of the mochta, we find, apart from our disposition of the 4th current, upon a Memorandum of commission moneys received from Pattena for the opium collected on 357. on the Demand for Ao 1767, which however also seems to require no special repetition here, concerning this trade, to report what was communicated from Pattena by missive of the 22nd of the past month, namely how the harmful project to have all the Opium collected by a Gomastah and subsequently divided among the Dutch, English, and French, detailed in a separate letter from the first two signatories of this dated February 1767, has recently again been in circulation. Herewith concluding that which under this main section required a special reply to your High Excellencies' honored missive, it occurs to us in the first place to cite here a petition presented to us on 20 October of the previous year by the officers, containing beforehand a detailed account of the reasons that made it well-nigh impossible, under the present poor circumstances of times and affairs on the Patna expedition, to be able to equip themselves and find a decent livelihood from salary and board money alone; and at the end a request that, for their accommodation, a resolution might be taken by us to grant something to the officer who should henceforth hold the command, as a gratuity, from which they might to some degree meet their necessary and inevitable expenses. Yet, in order not to go against our own measures aimed at curtailing the expenses on the Patna returns, and at the same time to keep in view your High Excellencies' recommendation to be attentive to everything that can be saved in that regard, we nevertheless deemed—however well known to us the truth of the petitioners' remonstrances is—that we ought not to consent thereto, but to submit the same to your High Excellencies, to see whether the demonstrated difficulties might find any reception and merit a favorable consideration from your High Excellencies. The first signatory of this request, namely the military lieutenant Carel Matthijs Willem de Lillé, [illegible] namely, we sent upcountry on 24 November to escort 13 vessels, with diverse goods, in fulfillment of the servants' requisition dated the ultimate of October 1766; and he arrived there on 31 December following, without being detained anywhere along the way, or being obliged to incur any expense. From Patna, on the other hand, successively, or since our last statement made regarding this, the following fleets have been dispatched: On 14 September 1767, under the escort of Corporal Johan George Looth with associates, 35 vessels with 13,666 maunds of saltpeter; On 18 October, under the supervision of the soldiers Strans and Gortsse, six vessels with 124 bales of diverse linens for the fatherland; On 5 December, under the escort of the soldier Jacob Ziegel, seven vessels with 4,000 maunds or 2,000 bags of saltpeter; On 16 December, with four vessels under the supervision of the soldier Pieter Visbeek, 107 bales of linen and 40 bladders of borax; On 10 January 1768, under the escort of two guardsmen by the names of Marten Teeklenburg and David Steenbreeker, 2,334 maunds or 4,167 bags of saltpeter and 16 bales of linen for the Indies; Item, on the 20th of the same month, with the dispatched Hugli vessels under the supervision of Sergeant Johan Pieter Degenhoff with associates, 801 chests of opium; and of these, according to Cassimbazar's letter of the ultimate of December last, Jacob Ziegel could not pass over the shallows of Tellingy without breaking bulk, on which account 200 Sonat Rupees, or 315 guilders, were sent to him by the servants for the hiring of smaller vessels, etc., to partially lighten and transport the saltpeter. [illegible] As soon as the said servants had private intelligence regarding the dispatch of the opium from Patna, they sent the cashier to Tellingy, as shown by what was communicated in their letters of 30 January and the 24th preceding, in order, if necessary, to help them quickly over the shallows, which proved very opportune, since the water had fallen so considerably that all the vessels had to be unloaded and the goods transshipped. A few days prior, upon the news received from the aforementioned Tekelenburg and Steenbreeker that their vessels were being detained at Rajmahal, Chief Bacheracht had requested and immediately obtained an order from the Lord Raja Dollobram, who, in the absence of the Junior Nawab, the Lord Muhammad Reza Khan, exercised supreme authority, not only for their release, but also to ensure that no complaints should be made about this in the future. We nevertheless request that it be taken into favourable consideration how, beyond the reasons brought forward for it, it may well come into consideration that with the unloading of the Company's ships, arriving as usual in the bleakest times of the year, to be reckoned from mid-June to mid-October, a great deal of time is lost, because one must sometimes let weeks pass one after another without being able to accomplish anything, and whereby also an uncommon delay is caused in matters which one would otherwise be able to bring to a conclusion, and especially the closing of the Books at the appointed time, because one can then, so to speak, only just be finished with the inventory, and make a beginning with the entry of those invoices, the goods of which are received before the last of August, the now recently completed second inventory under the last of August 1767 having not reached its conclusion earlier than 26 January following, when we, upon the finding received thereof and incorporated by resolution of the last-mentioned date, decided to keep the 3048 pieces of quill pens, which were found to be worm-eaten and unusable, until further orders from Your High Noble Honours, which we hereby humbly request to know what disposition one ought to make regarding such goods, To the Honourable George Louis Vernet, Director over the Company's trade and interests in the kingdoms of Bengal, Behar, and Orixa, etc., together with the Hooghly Council. written report that was received on the 22nd following, and by which it is evident that their previous position was erroneous and that of the servants correct, for which reason it was further resolved to have this also redressed, namely by giving effect to the recording of the true number of hand grenades in the Hooghly books according to the above-cited invoice, and to send four defective scales to Batavia at an opportune occasion without charging, as well as to exonerate the servants from all further accountability regarding that which, according to the first report, was alleged to have been lacking. At Patna the inventory found as of ultimo February 1767 agreed with the books, as appears from the report entered into the resolution of 22 June. Concerning the findings under ultimo August and our disposition thereon, we reported in our humble letter of the 19th of last month, so that under this heading we now only have to report the findings of the goods sent upcountry with the fleet in November last, sent to us along with the Patna letter of the 22nd of the past month, and according to which, in the session of the 4th of this month, we allowed the write-off of the discovered deficits of ½ lb or 5/32 per cent on the cinnamon, item 34½ lb or 1 19/50 per cent on the pepper, but of the cloves on which 26 lb or 13 7/19 per cent and the nutmegs on which 37¾ lb or scarcely 1 per cent were found lacking, no more than half of that which may be validated according to the first article of the General Regulation, and thus ½ per cent on the first and just as much on the last kind of spices (since we charged the storekeepers for one half and the ordinary commissioners for the other half for the remainder or 1/38 per cent on the cloves and ½ per cent on the nutmegs in compensation). But since the deficit on these items, as the servants themselves remark, was probably caused by drying out during the journey upcountry, we take the liberty to request Your High Nobilities that the aforementioned burdened persons may be relieved thereof, and that it be granted to us to write off on such and other goods subject to extraordinary drying out, especially around that time of the year when the Patna fleets are ordinarily dispatched from here, at least as much as is granted for that to the ship officers. The four pieces of green satin, which according to the cited letter were found to be very stained and unfit for a gift, and of which one piece was torn at the end and found to be only 32 ells long, thus 6¼ ells too short, we have ordered to be aired in the sun, so that in case the stains should disappear after drying, only the aforesaid lesser length along with the 5% ells that were also found short on a piece of crimson red moire would be charged back here and then paid for by the one to whom these goods were issued for use, which they omitted to reflect upon shipment. But if the said satins cannot be remedied by airing, the servants are authorized to send them back under a recharge of the cost, for our further disposition. But the 6 ounces and 3 drams of fine fluids found deficient out of a quantity of 16 ounces, and which occurred, as the servants write, due to the poor condition of the vials and corks, we have resolved to have compensated by the storekeepers and ordinary commissioners, each for one half, with orders to the servants to recharge the amount thereof back here. Also, according to the aforementioned Patna letter, only 30 instead of 60 bundles of binding rattans were said to have been received, concerning which, however, we note that this seems to be a mistake by the servants, who must have taken 50 rattans for a bundle, whereas according to the books they contain only 25, so that according to this calculation the first number must be correct, since 30 double and consequently 60 single ones were sent up. 385 Nutmegs brought by the ship Ysselmonde and the opening of three sokkels of mace brought by the Jonge Vrouwe Cornelia Jacoba, according to which we have written off the deficiency of 3½ lb or 1/16 per cent, item 824¾ lb or 11 7/16 per cent on the nutmegs, and 14¼ lb or 2 7/16 per cent ample of deficiency, plus 151 lb or 24 3/16 per cent of dust and sweepings and white leaves of the mace, provided that the Judicial Commissioners, Lieutenant de Lille and Junior Merchant Herklots, swore an oath on the report rendered by them regarding this, and that the dust and sweepings were dealt with according to custom. The resolution of 23 December, in which is incorporated a finding of 6,833 bags of saltpeter brought down from Patna in October last, and which according to the invoice should have contained 973,702½ lb, but in which was found here no more than 925,572¼ lb, consequently short 48,130¼ lb, or a shortage of 4 35/16 per cent, which we have written off. The decree of 19 February 1768, containing the disposition on a second finding of 337 of 2,000 bags of saltpeter, brought here in the beginning of January last, and which, according to the Patna invoice, should have contained 285,000 lb, and in which upon reweighing was found 274,891 lb, or a deficiency of 10,109 lb, or 3 3/16 per cent, which likewise were passed for write-off. On the remaining 400 bags, which were also brought in partly damp and wet, after deduction as before, a shortage of 5,323 lb was found, or 3 3/62 per cent, and on the whole parcel 94,008½ lb net, thus taken overall a shortage of 56 1/32 per cent, which deficiencies we, according to the proposal of the Head Administrator—that is to say, the former according to their value, and 393 the other in weight—have also written off, the declarations with the proof of their taking the oath added behind them being transmitted in copy among the enclosures. At the session of 3 July of last year, the memoranda of permitted deficiencies and write-offs of the warehouse masters and dispenser during the first six months of the book-year 1766/1767 were presented, when we, following the order, had all the small remainders specified by the former delivered to the Company by the warehouse masters by buyout, except for the 126½ shellac, which, no longer being in kind, we then agreed should be passed for write-off along with the shortages on the beverages mentioned in the other memorandum. retained, and that we, according to an attached report from the Ordinaris Commissioners, also have had them redelivered from the buyout, we discovered regarding the shellac to have been in error the first time, namely by resolving to write off the same as not being in kind, since it had already been supplemented by the Warehouse Masters from the parcel sent to the Netherlands in November previously per the ships D'oranje Saal and the Jonge Samuel, and thus had been delivered to the Company, which by the last resolution, although with an erroneous statement regarding the names of the ships, was noted, and according to which we had charged the Invoice-keeper Hagha Damius for reimbursement of the 25 Ebten undercharged unless he could demonstrate that it did not arise from any neglect on his part, and which having taken place to our satisfaction at the session of the 12th of the past month, we have thus relieved him again of this assessment, and resolved to have the Company indemnified in this matter by the Supplier. After then having notified Your High Nobles beforehand that there is presently no other building to be found that in a less costly manner 40 manner could be employed for a Hospital, our resolution of the above-mentioned date, having already been sent per the ship 't Huis ten Donk, may have already shown Your High Nobles that, as far as the first-mentioned building is concerned, besides the defects stated in a calculation inserted in the resolution of the 17th of June 1766, which have not yet been repaired, namely: three walls constituting the rear part of the hall, on the East, West, and South sides, the first two adjoining the new walls according to the report of the 12th of October 1761 (for the further favorable examination of Your High Nobles, and a copy annexed hereto) marked A, E, C, and A, and for the rebuilding of which has been estimated SRs. 1697. 7. 3/4 or ƒ 2635. 7. —, item for the flat roof above those walls, or the rear part of the hall SRs. 963. 10. 1/4 or ƒ 1445. 14. —, the following defects have also presented themselves: [illegible] In the residence of the chief surgeon, the rear wall of the rooms, alongside the walls of a small cabinet coming behind it, is in several places water-damaged and cracked for a length of 52, height 42, thickness 2 1/2 feet, the foundations long 52, deep 5, thick 4 feet, together making 6500 cubic feet, which consequently need to be renewed and plastered; the beams in these rooms seem on the outside to be sound and in good condition, but it is difficult to determine whether they are good or not as far as they stick into the wall. Of a room being the pantry, the rear wall and the flat roof are in a poor state, as the timberwork is entirely decayed and the wall has sagged; the same is long 18, high with the foundations 22, thick 2 feet; for taking out and inserting the beams, the front wall will have to be broken down, for a length of 18, height 3, thickness 2 feet, the masonry thus making together 900 cubic 159 403 900 cubic feet. The wall behind the kitchen, the laboratory, and a small room adjoining it has sagged and given way outward with a large bend, and is long 76, high 20, thick 2 feet, the foundations are equally long, deep 4, and thick 3 feet. Furthermore, it is of the highest necessity to make a covered stone drainage channel to the beach, so deep that it can discharge into the Ganges at low tide, because otherwise all the foul water that is led from the hospital through the gutters and subsequently runs along the beach, remaining standing there, causes an unbearable stench in the hot season. The gutter is 120 feet long, 1 foot wide, and 1 to 1½ feet deep, and the proposed new drainage channel is 120 feet long, 2 feet wide, and from 1½ to 5 feet deep. All of which defects, to our best knowledge and so far as we have outwardly been able to calculate, will be remedied with a small sum of P.r r.o 4450.–.– or ƒ 7012.15.–, wages and woodwork also included; and that, with what has been set down for the renewal of the first-mentioned walls and flat roofs, together amounting to S.r 2661.–.½ or ƒ 4193.1.15, being still defrayed, or fully S.r r.o 7000 being spent in total, we can say that the said building will be brought into the condition of a good hospital. And while the overall expenses will turn out to be S.r r.o 436. 5/8 or ƒ 68.7.8 more than we had calculated in that regard in our respectful letter of 31 January of the past year, considering that according to a memorandum registered by resolution of the 4th of this month, the improvements made to it up to now amount to P.o ro.oa 15872.6.–, add hereto the calculation proposed hereinbefore of fully 7000.–.–, [illegible] when one counts S.r r.o 22872.6.–, for the plot A. E 20000, or 89047.9.¾, makes P.r r.o 41919.15.¾, whereas our previous statement amounted to 41876.9. 7/8. Subtracting the lower from the upper, one now gets more than before: P.r r.o 43.6. 5/8, but only P.r C.o 15939.15¾ or ƒ 25105.8.8 more than what was calculated in the year 1761, arising from an error committed in the first calculation. Of the defects that were found on the buildings as of the ultimate of February and August 1766, no calculations were made, since the order in that regard was received after the commissioners appointed for the survey were already busy with the work. But this was subsequently observed and will never fail to be done in the future. August last, two memoranda and a summary were transmitted; they are incorporated by resolution of the 20th ejusdem, and show that the entire work amounts to L:a r:o 11594: 8: 15/63 or f18261:8:-, thus rupees 1924: 8: 3/63 more than that budgeted for it by an estimate incorporated into the resolution of 26 November 1765, originating on the one hand from the higher cost of the timber works, which had to be purchased pursuant to our license previously granted on 5 April because most of the beams received and sent thither were found to be too thin, and on the other hand on account of the deeper excavation of the foundations and a greater use of lime and stone than had been estimated previously, item some other necessary yet unforeseen expenses, detailed extensively in the summary; yet considering, to the Honorable George Louis Vernet, Director over the Company's trade and interests in the kingdoms of Bengal, Behar and Orixa, etc., together with the Council of Hugli, resolution of this assembly to serve from August 1765, as the same, [illegible], considering that the servants assured us that everything has been built sturdy and strong, and we find nothing to object against the expenses that caused the previously set limit to be exceeded, we likewise agreed to the servants' request to pass and write off the entire amount of the aforesaid memorandum, and we request Your High Noblenesses' favorable approval thereof. From Pattena, on the other hand, several particulars have occurred that considerably expand this matter again. The defects reported in an estimate of 12 May 1765 and approved by Your High Noblenesses to be repaired, have been remedied from time to time, yet all this does not seem sufficient to bring an end to so many vexatious representations concerning the worsening state of the Company's buildings at that factory. all looked very bad, and during a severe rainy season could not well be inhabited without danger to life, but for the most part were subject to an apparent collapse, as had already been stated in an accompanying letter of August 29th and in a report incorporated into the resolution of 16 7ber 1766. For we judged our ruling on this paper to be unnecessary, because we were then under the impression that the said defects, if not all, at least the principal ones, were to be reckoned among those for whose repair permission had shortly before been received from Your Right Noblenesses: so that before deciding upon this further petition of the servants, we saw fit on the 28th of the aforementioned month of April to have them first state which of the same were included among those of which the repair had been approved by Your Right Noblenesses, at the same time instructing them to send an estimate of what would have to be spent to put in order all such buildings of which no estimate had previously been made or for whose repair no consent had yet been granted. The servants sent us this paper on the 7th of June thereafter, and it was, Right Noble Gentlemen, not without astonishment that we saw therein that, for the repair of all the aforesaid dilapidated dwellings, an enormous amount of P:a ro:/a 12117:12:— or f 19085:9:2 was demanded anew; likewise that our thoughts regarding what had previously been approved turned out so contrary to the advice given by the servants, namely that among these newly stated defects there was only included the soldiers' guard or aforesaid red knapsack, for the repair of which f:o r:o 271: 4: — or f 427: 44: — had been set down in the approved estimate of May 12th 1765, but which had since fallen into such a dilapidated condition that there was no repairing it any longer, and thus it necessarily had to be renewed entirely, on which they had now also reckoned. We were requested for permission to put our hands to the work, and at the same time to be allowed to spend a further 600 Rupees on warehouse No. 2, which in the aforementioned estimate had been stated to be remediable by renewing a flat roof at the cost of Sa roa 348/— or f 548:2, since the same needed to be rebuilt entirely, because the walls then stood wobbling on their foundations, and the mortar was crumbling out everywhere, as was further affirmed in a report of the express Commissioners that was incorporated into the resolution of June 24th; and when we deemed it most advisable to postpone the decision for the present, partly because the rainy season was already so far advanced, and before our answer could reach there would be so severe that we found it completely unadvisable to begin tearing down fragile buildings, and partly because among all the stated defects, none appeared to us to be of such great urgency, and moreover it was assured by the Merchant La Font that the servants lacked no space for the storage of the Opium and Linens, but primarily out of a real dread of such heavy expenses at a time when one could not imagine otherwise than that one might have been free from such extraordinary expenses for some time. We communicated this decision of ours the following day to Patna, but a few days afterwards, there came with a letter of July 2nd yet another report, by which it was demonstrated that the Linen Warehouse was so infested by the White ants that all the laths were gnawed through and decayed, and the warehouse necessarily had to be provided with a new flat roof, and new frames for the doors and windows, and which according to the estimate made would cost S:o r:a 3158:— or f 4973: 17:—, to which repair very strong urging was made, since they were provided with no other place for storing the Linens, which had been placed in an apartment called the Baarreh Derrich and in the House of the chief, but within which they were not deemed safe, because the flat roof of the Barreh Derriel had risen so much due to old age and the heat of the sun that the leaks could practically not be stopped, and the water on all sides

had to be caught on all sides in pots, and that in the chief's house, through the carelessness or roguery of the people who had to be present daily, some accident or damage could easily occur. But however great the necessity was said to be for a speedy repair of this warehouse, on the day of the committee held on this matter, or the aforementioned 22nd of July, we nevertheless persisted in our previous resolution concerning the repairs that might be proposed during the rainy season, and referred the servants back to the answer already recounted, adding to it the assurances given on that day by the senior merchant and head administrator Isinck and merchant Lasont, that in the already repaired chintz printing works there was space enough to store the linens required by the Company, and that one could store even twice as much there, if the servants would also employ the cutcherry and other suitable buildings for that purpose, which we further made known we expected of them. To the Well-born George Louis Vernet, Director over the Company's trade and interests in the kingdoms of Bengal, Behaar and Orixa, etc., together with the members of the Council of Hougly. Yet this gave rise to the servants, in their reply of the 9th of August and a minute sent alongside it from the day before, not only making known in detail the absolute impossibility of managing with the designated rooms, but even not shrinking from accusing the aforementioned council members as if it had been their intention to mislead this ministry and bring their servants into suspicion, as though they lacked zeal to bring about everything that could serve to prevent damage to the Company; requesting at the same time that if they had to proceed according to the abovementioned instruction, they might then remain exempt from all compensation for damage that the linens were visibly bound to suffer, most expressly protesting against all accountability in that regard. In order not to be too verbose in an affair that will otherwise seem disagreeable enough, we shall not repeat here the particular defense of the aforementioned honorable Asinck and La Font against the manner in which the servants opposed their statements, which they declared had been made without the slightest view of partiality; nor the remarks that were made regarding the possibility that the aforementioned warehouse could have become so suddenly, or in less than a year's time, of such a wretched appearance; but we refer to our resolution of the 20th of the aforementioned month, pursuant to which, in order to break off all hateful pen-strife, we authorized the servants the next day to make a start at once with repairing all such defects through which the Company would suffer more damage by further delay, yet under such a strict restriction and conditions as we considered at that time to be highly necessary for our own protection; but which the servants regarded as an iron too hot to be grasped. In short, on the 27th of the following month, they raised a host of difficulties regarding the execution of that conditional license, against which they made several objections in a minute sent alongside it, concerning which, however, we were not able to judge with good reason until the 5th of last month, since the original letter, as has been said more than once, was lost with the minute, and the copy of the same did not reach us again until then. We have had them entered into the resolution of the abovementioned date, in order that Your Excellencies might spare the time to read through the same, and judge the matter in its entire context, wherein we also request that Your Excellencies might likewise please examine what the first undersigned, for the relief of the servants, had recorded in the resolution of the 4th of December prior, the more so as this might very well serve for the approval of our resolution taken on the 5th ultimo on what was communicated from Patna by letter of the 24th of the previous month, alongside which the survey and condition of the buildings has been sent anew, dated the 16th ejusdem, when the outgoing chief Rietveld made the transfer to his present interim replacement, the junior merchant.

Junior Merchant Falck, who assures us by the said letter that he did not rely on the reports of the Commissioners, but personally inspected all the defects and found them essentially to be as stated in their report, so that he, having attended the remaining business regarding this matter, judged that he would fail in his duty if he neglected to add his attestations to the representations that were made on this subject in previous letters; and for which reason the servants collectively requested that their statement be fully accredited, and that such a disposition might be taken concerning it, whereby the damage that was expected from a longer postponement of the necessary improvements, and among them chiefly the Linen Warehouse, might be prevented, all of which prompted us on the said 5th of February, however painful it may be to make the Company feel the burden of such oppressive expenses, nevertheless to give our consent to remedying all the defects that present themselves.
