The extraordinary presents or visual gifts of Patna are also stated in a memorandum [illegible] inserted by resolution of the 17th of November last past, showing that they amount in total to ƒ 480„7„ 8„ or ƒ 1363„19„— less than the preceding year, when, because of the presence of the Prince Shuja-ud-Daula, the departure of the outgoing and the arrival of another Chief, one had to spend ƒ 1844„ 6„ 8„; these belong to the book year 1766/7, and those which have been made since consist of the following. According to the missive of 24 December 1767, the deputy Maharaja Shitab Rai, on the occasion that he returned to Patna from a short excursion to Calcutta, was complimented by the courtiers at a cost of ƒ 189„—„—„ or ƒ 45„13„ 8„ more than had been spent on a similar occasion, caused by a higher disbursement to the servants, of whom the retinue this time was larger. Under the title of Court Expenses we judge not unjustly to include what was noted by decree of the 21st of April of the past year, namely how, in order to cultivate more and more the good harmony and friendship that existed between the Hooghly faujdar Mirza Muhammad Qasim Khan and the Company, the Director in December last past, upon his repeated insistence, was obliged not only to go visit him, but to stay for the supper that he had expressly prepared, and that he, the Director, thus had to entertain that regent on his return visit according to his status and after the manner of the country, likewise with ceremony, and had to incur expenses for the meal and otherwise of Arcot rupees 2820„—„ or ƒ 4230„—„—„, specified in a memorandum inserted in the resolution; and which expenses we, being of the understanding that the Company was too much concerned with the goodwill of the regents for it to expose itself to aversion and disfavour by economizing or saving on such or other small costs, have caused to be written off to the Presents account, in conformity with the Director's proposal. remained exempt from the handing over of any extraordinary presents, since that prince on the one hand himself insisted on the visit, and on the other spared the trouble of a return visit, so that nothing else had to be given than the customary audience gifts, without which one cannot approach personages of rank, and which in total amount to ƒ1078 2 8. The incurred expenses to the Durbar at Moxsid-abaad since primo November 1766 until ultimo August 1767 come, according to the memorandum received from Kassembazaar and incorporated by resolution of September 22, to stand at ƒ3923 6 8, and thus ƒ1200 11 8 less than in the year 1765/6, when they had amounted to ƒ5123 18 —, a matter that will appear not disagreeable to Your High Nobilities as well as to us. From Pattena, alongside the multiple letters of April 3 from the servants, the sworn declaration has been sent to us regarding the proper payment of the Pees-kes for the year 1766, amounting according to that document, incorporated by resolution of the 28th of the above-mentioned month, in total to Sicca rupees 26410, or ƒ41595 15 —. For the year 1767, there has been handed over in two installments 20,000 or ƒ31500 — —, which payments, as unavoidable, were passed at the session of December 7 and February 5 last, because no objections to the contrary could be raised against them. We had more apprehension regarding what the servants made known to us by letter of August 9 last, namely how the Vizier Souja Ud doula was expected at Pattena within 20 to 25 days, and was to be received and complimented with the required ceremonies due to his high dignities by the English themselves, and their simultaneous inquiry as to how they should conduct themselves and with what formalities they should welcome His Serenity, considering that since this prince intended to enter the city, this could not be managed as in the previous year, when His Excellency had been at Syoppra, with a small audience gift of 5 gold rupees, the more so as Sitaab Raey had let them know to be on their guard to compliment His Highness properly, as he was a prince of exalted authority and prestige; and upon which they requested an immediate decision. But on the 20th of the aforementioned month, deliberating upon this, we took our measures in accordance with the frequently and quite recently repeated recommendation from Your High Nobilities not to allow too lavish a hand in the granting of presents to great Moors, and having measured the prestige and power of that prince according to the present circumstances of times and affairs, and instructed the servants to pay more attention to that than to the glory and pride of a Vizier who nowadays has scarcely more to say than a zero in a cipher. We consider it unnecessary to repeat our specific and conditional authorization here verbatim, because according to the servants' reply of September 27, that visit is postponed for quite some time, and as is to be hoped, will probably be omitted entirely, since up to now nothing further has been heard of it. That which Your High Nobilities come to order with respect to the trade books, namely to introduce no novelties therein without prior knowledge and authorization, and consequently to revoke the license granted to the Trade Bookkeeper to bring the different varieties of Gingams from Olmara and Houghly under one heading, and also to follow the previous custom regarding the entry of invoices, we have communicated in an extract to the said Trade Bookkeeper for his guidance; whereby our ruling on a report submitted at the session of April 28 by the same Trade Bookkeeper, accompanied by various enclosures as evidence to show that the outgoing invoices were indeed entered into the books of the year 1765/6, must also lapse, namely in allowing the invoice clerk, instead of making so many different adjustment invoices, henceforth to draw up annually in February only two general redress invoices, that is to say, one for the Netherlands and one for Batavia, for such purpose as the said report indicates, which, in conformity with the resolution also passed, we have the honor to submit herewith in original to Your High Nobilities.

Meanwhile, at the meeting of 25 August, upon another report submitted by the Trade Bookkeeper and incorporated by resolution concerning various omissions and irregular dealings discovered by him during the formation and continuation of the Journal of the year 1766/7, we have made such arrangements as are noted at length in that resolution, and regarding which we judge no other repetitions need be made here, except that, according to the 9th point, we have caused the 2500 lb of Pepper—for which the authorities of Ysselmonde were credited on account in the autumn of 1766, but which was subsequently discovered, namely at the session of 27 January 1767, to be an error—to be charged to Batavia instead of credited, as according to the resolution and invoice of accounting of the aforementioned date was found to have been done; item, to send an extract to the aforementioned servants of the eleventh article, concerning the prices that were to be obtained at the subordinate offices for the fine spices, for their guidance and observance in the future, as well as of the 17th item, in order to prevent such an omission as is shown therein to have taken place in the Journal of the year 1765/6, namely forgetting to credit the main account for 1 1/13 percent discount on a draft in the amount of f 6300 granted to the merchant La Font in that financial year, for which reason, besides the redress that was to take place here, we wrote to the servants on 23 September that when money is paid into their cash, they are to credit the principal to the account of the Bengal Office and the customary discount to the Profit and Loss account, and also to charge this Main Office accordingly; furthermore, regarding the item of Vr 27720 7/63 that was found to be lacking in the books on the account of Sicca rupees, which was still outstanding, as appears from the notes in our decree of 17 November, we were of virtually the same opinion as Your High Honours, whose pleasure thereon we have made known to the Trade Bookkeeper, with the delivery of copies and extracts, both of their marginal decisions on two reports of the Honourable Examiner and Bookkeeper General of 27 September, and from the letters of 18 June and 7 October last, as well as, pursuant to what was permitted in the former, ordered him to credit the account of the late Mr Kersseboom with f 3904 16 8 and to write off the remainder of his debit in the sum of f 86601 5 8 to the debit of the General Office; and with respect to the weapons of six soldiers arriving from the Cape in the year 1764, and charged from there by invoice of 14 June, which according to the orders in the first cited letter had to be taken in and accounted for by the person who ought to have taken care of them, it was decided by us during the business of 14 October last to redress this in this manner, namely to indeed take in the same weapons, but to write them off again immediately; just as we further, upon the presentation made by the same Trade Bookkeeper in our meeting of 26 January last, qualified him to redress a slight error discovered by them upon the issuance of a draft to the Kassembazaar Storekeeper Daniel Overbeek, who, as can be seen more broadly in the resolution, had paid f 125 too much into cash thereon, which we thus caused to be credited to the aforementioned office, to be refunded to him there from cash, which, as appears from the advice of the servants of 24 February, has also taken effect, under a representation from the chief, the Honourable Johannes Bacheracht, that it was not ignorance or negligence on his part, but a mistake made by Overbeek himself, he having failed to inform his correspondents locally that his intention was to receive a net f 1500 in Europe, instead of counting out only that much at Kassembazaar and thus receiving that much less in the Netherlands. Furthermore, upon a memorandum submitted on the 11th of this month by the Trade Bookkeeper of such items as needed to be redressed and transferred in the books under the last of August 1767, we decided to carry out both matters according to his proposal, the said memorandum being inserted by resolution, to which we respectfully refer regarding the matters themselves, as they require no further specific mention here.

Regarding the clarification expected by Your High Noble Lordships as to where the two whole and eleven half leaguers, which were unloaded from the ship Schoonzicht in the year 1764 and according to the statement provided to us were furnished to the sloop De Haaring on its voyage to the Coromandel Coast, finally ended up or were secured, we can report nothing other than what was shown to us for that purpose, in satisfaction of the requisition, at the session of 31 January 1767 on the following 7 November by the then outgoing provisional Equipage Master Cornelis van der Stam, namely that one cannot get to the bottom of it because there are no longer any persons present who can shed light on the matter. For the rest, concerning our decisions on the accounts received in the past year from the main office, we refer to the resolutions of 11 and 23 December, whereby the extract invoices were recorded, and containing no matters that require further quotation here, since that concerning which Your High Noble Lordships' orders are awaited has already been dealt with in our respectful letter of 11 January last; nevertheless, we let these accompany this by way of extracts. For the examination of the books of the Main Office, the Council members Jan Pieter Humbert and Louis de Saumaise were commissioned on the 4th of the past month, and they submitted a report in writing on the 18th instant. And although the same has already been inserted by the Resolution of that date, we nevertheless believe we should attach a separate extract thereof for Your High Noble Lordships' further pleasing inspection, from which Your High Noble Lordships, if it please you, will then see that the principal disposition consists in having the Company indemnified by the invoice keeper Iohan Henrik Haghadamius for various errors committed in the invoices of the return and other ships mentioned therein, pursuant to Your High Noble Lordships' latest order that the subsequent charging of this or that item to the Netherlands may not occur if it cannot arrive there in time or before the sale of the goods, but must remain for the account of the defaulting party; nevertheless subject to his right of representation against this to Your High Noble Lordships. And furthermore referring ourselves to the resolution itself, we have the honor to inform Your High Nobilities, concerning what was set down under this chapter in the formal rescript of 21 July 1767, that the Council of Justice of this Office has been notified, by extract therefrom, of the prohibition revoked by Your High Nobilities against the disbursement of funds from the estates of Ribaut and de Wilde, and the expectation that the same would soon be brought to liquidity and the interest of the Company would be cared for; while, as regards the debt of Jacques Lasour, amounting to 11775:2:— florins, and concerning which Your High Nobilities also renewed your previous order to ensure that the Company was kept indemnified without this depending on the uncertain proceedings regarding the estate of Ribaut, what was noted in the margin of the aforementioned report concerning the examination of the books is also respectfully repeated here, namely: that because no money or effects were to be found here belonging either to Lasour or to the repatriated Junior Merchant Decker as having married the widow of Lasour, one could do nothing other than proceed by way of attachment upon that which Decker had to claim in his wife's name from the estate of Ribaut; and for which, as appears from what was noted again in the aforementioned resolution of the 22nd of this month, pursuant to a judicial sentence of the Council of Justice of this Office, passed on 31 March and pronounced on 7 April 1764, there has been attached and declared executable whatever the said Decker has to expect from the frequently mentioned estate of Ribaut for his claim of 63996 florins, 9 stivers, 8 pence; and for which reason that debt, as well as that with which Ribaut himself still stands debited in the books for 30681 florins, 11 stivers, will have to continue to be carried forward To the Honorable and Respected George Louis Vernet Director over the Company's Trade and Interests in the Kingdoms of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, etc. Together with the Council of Hugli. By the Cossimbazar letter of the 12th of October last is inserted the state of the office as of the last day of August prior, and alongside that we have received a report from the commissioned Junior Merchants Daniel Overbeek and Jacob Nicasius de Meier concerning the examination of the books, by which it appears that, as far as could be traced, no mistakes or improper handlings have been discovered therein. The same was inserted by Resolution of the 20th of the first-mentioned month, and regarding that no other particularity occurred, other than a note that of the current debtors, the item of Moetsiram concerning advances on reeling wages at ƒ 31310.8.-, for reasons as have already long been noted, by decree of the 14th prior, is dubious, and since last year has increased to ƒ 6452.8.-. In which respect, by virtue of Your Right Honorables' recommendation to take care that the Company suffers no damage in this matter, we here request a kind and favorable consideration of the reasons set forth in the above-mentioned Resolution of the 14th of October, regarding the absolute impossibility of exercising more supervision against this than appears from the books to have occurred since the years 1754/5 to 1762/3, and the cause that at the same time makes it impossible to completely clear or settle this item. The difference between the Trade books and Cash accounts, which the employees presented to us in their letter of the 12th of November 1766, and which we noted by Resolution of the 21st of the same month, has turned out to be no real difference, but an error of writing in the Cash account of the month of December 1760, and which has been redressed in such manner as stands annotated in the resolution of the 20th of October last. But the difference with the mint in the amount of eight stivers and eight pennies, having not been able to be found due to a lack of some documents that were missing, has therefore remained outstanding until there shall be an opportunity to make a closer investigation into it. From the examination of the Patna trade books, a report was received alongside the said letter of 26 October, in which the state of that office as of the last of August is also shown.
