In respectful response to your High Nobilities' respected separate dispatch of 14 July last, we shall, regarding the indemnification of the Honourable Company for the prejudice that your Nobilities might come to suffer through the demise etc. of one or more Bimlipatnam merchants concerning their debts arising from the moneys advanced to the same, at the first convenient opportunity make as much use as possible of the means that, having seemed best to your High Nobilities, you have accordingly been pleased to refer to us, namely to have the amount thereof made good by the chiefs; the present state of that factory not being so favourable that any attempts can be made to obtain Bimlipatnam in perpetual lease, wherefore that must also, in accordance with your High Nobilities' esteemed recommendation, be deferred until times change for the better and the Honourable Company can derive that lasting benefit from it that was intended. Regarding the refusal by the Tanjore Court to deliver the receipt for the 6 elephants, we refer to our general report presented to your High Nobilities on this occasion. Concerning the demand of the English for the present that was customarily given annually for the offices of Palicol and Jagannathapuram to the Nawab of Rajahmundry, as well as the lease moneys for the villages of Gollepallem and Gondavaram since the departure of our respectful separate dispatch of 21 March last, further application having been made in that regard by the English Governor at Masulipatnam, conforming to what was communicated by the Jagannathapuram and Palicol chiefs in their letters of 27 and 28 February of this year, it was deliberated at our session of 29 March following, that, however true and at the same time known to everyone the surrender of the Northern Circars to the English was, and that one would consequently in the end be reduced to the necessity of handing over that present to that nation, if one did not otherwise wish to see the trade of the Honourable Company obstructed by the British, one nevertheless could not proceed to do so before and until the English ministry at Madraspatnam, which, as already remarked at our session of 12 February and in our latest dispatched reports, held the supreme authority of that nation here on the coast, should give us notice of that altered form of government, and at the same time show the right upon which that demand was warranted, whereby the Moor, on whose granted cowls and privileges one had been admitted to trade in these lands, had to be bypassed; all of which was amply discussed and recorded in our aforementioned resolution of 29 March, wherein were also taken into consideration the impediments that could be caused by the English in case of a final refusal of the delivery of the aforementioned customary present, the unfavourable and altered state of the Moorish government of these lands, since the same, to wit the Moors, who previously were able to lay down the law to everyone, now, being subjugated to the English, had to conduct themselves merely as renters of land and toll collectors, who do not know how to find their fortune elsewhere among their own nation; the indifference as to whom that customary yet voluntary present was given, provided it was done lawfully; for which reasons we resolved on that day provisionally to deliver it, although we first had the Palicol chiefs confer with the Nawab Hasan Ali Khan concerning that demand of the English, and ask him categorically whether he desisted from that to which the Honourable Company had bound itself towards his Excellency, as having hitherto represented the Moorish government of those lands, with respect to the aforementioned annual present, until such time and until the intelligence and the required disclosure regarding the cession of those lands should be obtained from the English ministry at Madraspatnam, over whose silence in this matter we made our astonishment known to the aforementioned English chief at Masulipatnam, the delivery thereof should remain suspended; just as the said ministers addressed us some time thereafter, giving us to understand that from the correspondence held between their aforementioned Deputy Governor at Masulipatnam and our chiefs at Palicol, the non-payment of the aforementioned annual presents having come to their attention, they had to attribute the same to the proper knowledge, which it seemed to them we still lacked, of the right by which they were entitled to demand the aforementioned presents, doing so to that end

finally received the copy in Persian of the Firman granted by the Mughal in the year 1766, as proof of the cession of the provinces Siccacol, Eloer, Moestoefanagar, Ragiemahondrawarom, and Moesaffanagar, the Dutch translation of which has been inserted into our Resolution of 22 June, with the assurance that the original thereof was kept at Madras, and thus they were prepared to show it to whomever we might wish to qualify for that purpose, requesting at the same time that the chiefs of Palicol and Jaggernaijck might be ordered to pay without any further delay the annual tributes, as they called them. Whereupon, during our aforementioned session, as no further reasons remained to hesitate about the lawfulness of this demand, since it contained nothing more than that which the previous possessors had enjoyed, for these and other reasons cited in the text of the aforementioned resolution, it was resolved to instruct the chiefs, without waiting for the aforementioned requested answer from the Nawab Assan Aly Chan, nor, having received it, to pay any regard to it, to pay the aforementioned gift in cash according to the requisition of the English conform to the notes sent by them to the chiefs, which are to be found among the appendices hereto, alongside the lease money of the villages Gollepalam and Gondewarom, demanding the customary dustucks for the safe conduct of the Company's linens and other goods. Having given notice of this our granted qualification to the said English ministry in reply to their letter, and having at the same time requested them to issue the necessary orders to their subordinates for the free course of the trade of the Honourable Company, with the provision of all facilities that the Honourable Company has always had from the Moor by virtue of its obtained prerogatives, and with which purpose this annual offer was made, those ministers informed us by their letter of 20 July last that, since there existed a great difference between privileges and indulgences, they therefore deemed it most necessary that full disclosure, as well as knowledge and instruction, be given to them regarding the contents of our privileges, so that the necessary orders might be issued ensuring that the same are in no manner whatsoever violated, further declaring that they would carefully avoid interfering with any privileges of the Honourable Company on the basis of the friendship existing between both nations; therefore, all indulgences within their power would be granted, but the same could not be permitted before it was shown wherein those privileges consisted, urging us to the same candidness as they had shown in laying before us the right they had to the Circars, or the northern provinces previously ceded to them; desiring to that end to know the extent of the Company's possessions and the privileges attached to them, as well as by virtue of which documents they were held, and in what manner they might obtain sight of the original pieces thereof should the necessity thereof appear to them. These requisitions having been deemed, at our meeting of 5 August, not only reasonable but also necessary so that, being informed of the privileges of the Honourable Company, they cannot plead ignorance thereof upon the arising of disputes, it was resolved to send them copies, both in Dutch and Persian, of the general Firmans concerning duty-free trade and other preeminences mentioned in the aforementioned resolution, granted by the Mughal Emperors Aurangzeb and Jahandar Shah in the years 1689 and 1712, which were deemed sufficient and adequate to remove all doubts, should any be found among the English regarding the legitimacy of the Company's possessions and prerogatives. However, it was nevertheless resolved to defer the sending of those documents for a few days in order to learn whether Your Right Honours, in your general rescript which was expected at any moment with the ship De Vrouw Elisabeth, might have pleased to give any orders regarding the communication sent from here that might run contrary to the sending of those privilege documents; but not seeing that vessel appear by 29 August, and it having been considered by us that this delay might lead the English to believe that, not being provided with such documents as had been invoked, we were trying to rustle them up or fabricate them, it was resolved not to delay them any longer, but to send them forward immediately to remove all suspicion, which indeed took place on that very day. We meanwhile are and trust that our actions in this matter will be approved by Your Right Honours, while with respect to this we respectfully refer to the separate resolutions passed concerning this and accompanying this letter, dated 29 March, 11 May, 22 June, 5 and 29 August last, as well as to the letters exchanged to and fro with the said English government and the chiefs of Jaggernaijkpoeram and Palicol. With the safe arrival of the ship Renswoude at the island of Ceylon, we had the high honor, by way of address from the ministry there, to receive Your High Noble, Right Honorable Lordships' very revered letter of 25 October 1769, with the annexes belonging thereto, according to the accompanying register dated 25 November following; the extracts from the requisition of returns from the Indies received therewith we have, as far as this government is concerned, immediately distributed among this main settlement and the subordinate factories of this coast, whereof the contracting, both here and at the offices of Sadraspatnam and Palliacatta, having already taken place, the contracts with the merchants have been concluded at the most recently paid prices, as also at Palicol with the cancellation of the increase previously granted on the coarse cloth, while there is hope that at Jaggernaikpoeram as well the merchants will be persuaded to allow the increase granted to them to be reduced. But the traders of Bimilipatnam have not been willing to listen to any reduction of the 4 per cent enjoyed by them, as is treated more extensively in our advices dispatched today to Their High Nobilities the Noble High Indies Government at Batavia, to which we, with great respect, refer not only in that regard, but also concerning our humble response served in the margin of the extracts from Your High Noble, Right Honorable Lordships' respected letters of 7 and 25 October of last year addressed to the aforementioned High Indies Government, trusting that the same may also meet with the revered approval of Your High Noble, Right Honorable Lordships; in which expectation we further accompany this with the copies of our resolutions taken since 27 November of last year until 23 November of this year, as well as the copies of our successive advices presented to Their High Nobilities under dates of 21 March, 30 June, and 29 September last, by which Your High Noble, Right Honorable Lordships will be pleased to observe what has occurred and been performed in the Company's service here on the Coast, as well as that the collection in the concluded trading year across the entire Coast amounted to a quantity of 3765 packs, and thus 329 packs more than the year before, of which a closer and clearer demonstration is given in the accompanying answered requisitions and the separate statements attached thereto, which are also accompanied by the two provisional answered requisitions for the year 1771. Meanwhile, in so far as it applies to this government, or might be found relevant in the future, we shall dutifully obey the order regarding the accurate registration of the muster rolls of the Moorish seafarers, and the securing of the necessary proofs in case of their discharge or decease, contained in Your Right Honourables' venerated resolution of 19 July of this year; while, in compliance with the report required from all administrators on this Coast by the Extract from a later Resolution of the 26th of that month, we have the honour to note herein that all servants here on the Coast, without exception, who are appointed to any administration, have posted the required surety according to the order, and that it is also not neglected, as soon as they change offices, to have them post the caution each time thereafter. The pleasure which Your Right Honourables express at taking in our proceedings in the service of the Honourable Company are incentives that will further spur us to make every effort that one may expect from honour-loving servants for the preservation and increase of that precious confidence; and we shall accordingly fix our attention to increase from time to time the collection of textiles, and above all to ensure that sound cloths are delivered; regarding which we flatter ourselves to have succeeded reasonably well during the last three years, for although through the large supply, by which everything becomes saturated, and possibly on account of several other causes, the price has considerably fallen, we trust nonetheless that the weave in itself will have contributed nothing to that. We now proceed to the Coromandel matters, of which the treatment for several consecutive years was for us a most troublesome work, as there repeatedly occurred multiple matters that gave us the most just reasons for displeasure; and whose harmful consequences the Company still feels in various respects. It is therefore all the more agreeable to us, in the treatment now taken in hand, to be able to perceive actual tokens of a notable improvement in the management of this government; and we will therefore also not refrain from expressing our special pleasure thereat. provision of the coarse cloths, when the shortage at Batavia was at its highest, without having had to resort to the authorized 10 percent augmentation, which price increase has already been revoked at this main office, and will apparently soon be followed at the other offices, except Sadras, whose merchants are shameless enough to speak of an increase rather than a reduction; were it not that many of the merchants still had to be spared on account of their debt to the Honorable Company, the situation with the linen trade would be far more favorable; in any case, we assure Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses that we shall do everything to give satisfaction, and it would also be the height of ingratitude if we acted otherwise, since Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses, recently following your honored letter of 25 October 1769, have been pleased to grant 3 percent of the return yield of the linens which will be collected here and sold in Europe to the governor, the chief administrator, as well as to the heads of the linen-producing offices; the aforementioned persons most humbly thank Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses for this great favor shown to them, and in respect of which their obligation is all the greater, because it was granted unexpectedly, at a time when, owing to the poor market for cloths in Europe, it is not very convenient for the Honorable Company to benefit its servants with extra gratuities. We have also applied ourselves with zeal to bring about the further necessary improvements, in order to be able to fulfill the requisitions both for the Indies and for the Netherlands with sound linens; above all, we must recommend to the ministers the procurement of coarse cloths, since we have learned with great displeasure that Your Honors, by reason of the great shortage of those linens, have found yourselves obliged not only to purchase those varieties at Batavia from foreign traders, but also to authorize the ministers to increase the price of those cloths by ten percent, even with the threat that, if the requisition were not completely fulfilled, Your Honors would be compelled to take such other measures as should appear most suitable to you to provide the capital of the Indies with the necessary linens and to be able to supply the respective out-factories with the required assortments. From all this we can easily infer that the shortage of coarse cloths must have been uncommonly great, and from that consideration we must resign ourselves to those extraordinary purchases and permitted price increases; yet we trust at the same time that the extraordinary measures will not have been used further than was necessary to obtain what is absolutely required for the convenience of the Batavian community, as well as for the provision of the eastern provinces and, if necessary, also of Sumatra's West Coast; for apart from that absolutely necessary provision, it would certainly not be advisable to have recourse to such extraordinary and costly measures, while experience has shown that when such dearly purchased linens have been sent to other offices, they could not be disposed of there without a loss, and therefore had to be sent back to the capital. Concerning the employment of the Company's ships that must serve for the transport of merchandise, provisions, etc., we have addressed Your Honors repeatedly; and becoming more and more convinced of the necessity of practicing economy, especially also in the employment of the ships, in order to reduce the burdens of the Indies, we have with that intention, in our general letter of 6 October 1766, suggested among other things to Your Honors whether it were indeed necessary to send the Coromandel linens collected for the Netherlands there via Batavia, or whether those linens could not conveniently be collected by the ships departing from that capital for Ceylon or Bengal, in order to be forwarded from there with the direct return ships. Having received last year Your Honors' considerations on this matter, as well as those of the ministers, it has also appeared to us, after weighing the reasons adduced, that it would not be advisable to employ the ships destined from the capital for Ceylon for collecting the Coromandel linens, because those ships, in continuing their voyage from the coast to Ceylon, might be delayed too much and held up too long by contrary winds and currents; but with regard to the Bengal ships, that difficulty does not apply, and according to the view of the ministers, those ships could collect the Coromandel linens without any delay or notable hindrance in their voyage to the Ganges. We do see that in your letter of 20 October 1767 various other difficulties are raised against that plan, but as it appears to us, those difficulties could be sufficiently removed by proper arrangements. For as far as concerns the apprehension that the Bengal ships would have to be detained too long on the coast, and thereby arrive too late in the Ganges to be able to send the Coromandel linens to the Netherlands with the first return ships departing from there, that can be provided against by the arrangement which the ministers have proposed. The settlement of the disputes with the Bimilipatnam princes seemed, according to the separate letter from the lord governor to Your Honor of 21 December 1767, to be on a good footing, and we flattered ourselves that those matters would have been settled amicably and the lease transferred again to the Company for five years on a reasonable footing; but since those good prospects have disappeared, we must wait to see how that matter will ultimately turn out. Meanwhile, it also seems strange to us that no proof is found that the Company has any right to the ground on which the fort is built; the caul granted to the Company on 26 December 1754 and mentioned in your separate letter of 28 June 1767 seems to demonstrate that right sufficiently, but since the ministers make no mention of that document in their answer to your said letter, this makes us think that they do not consider it sufficient proof of the Company's right. The contract recently entered into with the princes clearly contains that the ground on which the fort is built is ceded to the Company, which we have not been able to perceive in any of the preceding cauls. With regard to Masulipatnam, it is certain that keeping it is a heavy burden for the Company, without it deriving any present benefit from it; nor can we expect that as long as that place is in the hands of the English or French nation, the Dutch Company will be able to conduct any noteworthy trade there with profit. Yet it is not impossible that circumstances may change, and since, according to the understanding of the ministers, Masulipatnam would not be a profitable place for the Company's trade even if that city were to come under its former lord again, only this consideration occurred to us regarding the breaking up from there: whether, considering that the ground on which the Company's lodge stands is rented, that has already cost a handsome penny, and now saved, but is all rented in small parcels, the Honorable Company has not owned the ground where the lodge stood, to receive there, but as long as the English possess Masulipatnam and its surrounding lands, or if the French were to become masters of it again, there is nothing for the Honorable Company to do there; were it that by a revolution of affairs the Honorable Company could establish itself there, we would not lack ground, but with open arms, but is considered to be the very best, if not the only well-situated location for the residence of the servants, the abandonment of that ground might not be of disadvantageous consequence in a change of times; however, we leave the assessment as well as the further handling of that matter entirely to Your Honor. The resolution of the ministers of 16 July 1767 regarding the commenced dispatch by the Portuguese of several ships from Europe to the Indies also meets with our approval, and we hope that the measures devised therein may answer the intended purpose. The Honorable Company has completely reached its quota. Under the main heading of servants, we have learned with great displeasure that upon the death of the Porto Novo resident Jacob Jacobs, a sum of Pagodas 3872. 23. - was found short in the funds entrusted to him. And that shortly after the death of that resident, his son, the bookkeeper Pieter Matthijs Jacobs, deserted from the Company's service. We see indeed that the lord governor seemed to have hope that the Company might yet emerge from this without loss, and we wish to expect the best from it; but we must nevertheless testify with Your Honor that it is very much to be lamented that vice and faithlessness so often play their part on this coast, and one almost cannot know in whom one may place any trust. Yet we have at the same time considered that if some percent of the purchase price of the linens were granted to the said ministers and servants, this might at times have a detrimental influence on the purchase of those goods: after all, if they have no advantage to expect from an expensive purchase, but on the contrary their interest lies in a profitable sale of the collected linens, they will thereby be the more encouraged to procure linens that are of the required quality and assortment. The governor as well as the chief administrator here assure Your High Noble and High Mightinesses most sincerely on their word of honor that they will demand nor take any money, nor money's worth, from the merchants, whether under the name of costumados or any other denomination that might could or would be given thereto, neither directly through themselves nor through their kin, much less enter into any agreements with them or others in that regard; while they shall at the same time ensure that the heads of the subordinate factories likewise do not commit any offense in that respect; but should this declaration not give sufficient assurance to Your High Noble and High Mightinesses as well as the Noble High Indies Government at Batavia, they are prepared to take the oath of purgation annually, on the formula drafted for that purpose and inserted into our Resolution of 23 November of the past year. — We have subsequently, on that ground and in the expectation that the said ministers and servants, as faithful and honor-loving servants, will henceforth neither demand nor receive any of the costumados which previously had to be paid by the merchants or others, resolved to grant, provisionally and until our further orders, to the governor and the chief administrator as well as to the heads of the linen-supplying offices on the Coast of Coromandel, as a means of subsistence, three percent of the proceeds of the linens that shall be collected on that Coast upon our demands and sold here in this country: while we have furthermore, in conformity with your proposal made, resolved to make that means of subsistence for the said servants take effect with the financial year 1767/8, and accordingly to cause them to enjoy the granted three percent of the proceeds of the linens which we have received in the year 1768 pursuant to our demand of 1766 and were sold here in this country in that year, the amounts whereof will be specified to Your Honors by the Amsterdam Chamber at the first opportunity. Company was previously granted has been suspended until further order of His said Majesty. And to each and every one of His Majesty's subjects, both in Europe and elsewhere, under certain conditions, free navigation and trade to and from the East Indies is permitted; what consequences this made change in the aforementioned navigation and trade of the French will have is completely uncertain up to now, as it cannot be foreseen whether that private navigation will pick up strongly and be pursued. For the present, according to the information received, only five ships have been equipped by private individuals, of which three are destined for China. China, but whether those ships will be followed by more others, time will have to tell; it is meanwhile entirely to be feared that this private navigation and trade of the French will be very disadvantageous to the Dutch Company. And it is therefore also, as we trust, not necessary to specifically recommend to Your Honours to keep a watchful eye on that private navigation and trade and carefully to avoid everything that might tend to its promotion to the prejudice of the Dutch Company; since the nature and importance of the matter in every way demands those attentivenesses and precautions. We accordingly also expect that the ministers and servants at the respective trading posts will likewise comply therewith, and that Your Honours will on all occasions inform us of what shall come to Your Honours' notice from time to time regarding that private navigation and trade of the French. We must meanwhile add hereto, for your and the ministers' information, that our intention is not that to the subjects of the said highest Majesty, who with their ships provided with proper sea letters and further documents might arrive at the Batavia roadstead or at other Company trading posts where the ships of foreign nations may be admitted, there should not be granted the help and convenience that they might need and request on account of suffered sea perils or other circumstances, whereas on the contrary to the subjects of His said highest Majesty there shall have to be shown the same help and convenience which those of other powers with which the Dutch State is in peace and friendship would enjoy in similar cases; remaining therefore also with regard to the subjects of His Most Christian Majesty fully applicable, the recommendations which we have made repeatedly and most recently in our general rescript of the 7th of this month, to pay the required attention, both in the furnishing of equipment goods and other necessities and in the showing of the requested conveniences, to the cause from which the necessity of the demanded assistance arises, and in making those provisions, etc., to proceed with the recommended economy to prevent the disadvantageous consequences, which have often arisen from the showing of superfluous conveniences and in the future are to be expected more and more in proportion as the commanders of the ships of foreign nations increasingly seek out the Batavia roadstead and other ports under the jurisdiction of the Dutch Company. Upon the requests made to us by Your Honours in letters of 15 May, 21 October, and the last of December 1768, we have seen fit to approve the appointment of Martinus Jan Bosman to the rank and salaries belonging to the aforementioned positions. For the same reasons we have seen fit to grant the rank of junior merchant with the salary and emoluments belonging thereto to Rudolph Florentius van Niepoort, etc., and Fredrik Willem Bloeme, invoice keeper at Nagapatnam, the salaries of all the aforementioned persons approved and promoted by us to take effect from the day that, according to the regulation on the promotion of servants, they were qualified to obtain the rank belonging to their respective positions. Together with the said Bloeme, he takes the humble liberty to express to Your Right Honourable, Right Worshipfuls his most humble thanks for the high favour shown to him in his promotion; he promises by zeal and faithfulness to endeavor to make himself worthy thereof. The Governor has used the liberty to recommend to Your Honours' favour the chiefs of Jaggernaickpocham, the junior merchant Pieter Baars, and bookkeeper Ian Dumon, to the end that through His Honour's proposal to Your Right Honourable, Right Worshipfuls with the ranks. van Slingelandt The first-named was honored as Merchant, and the second-mentioned as Junior Merchant, and was done to favor with the rank and salary of Merchant the person of Pieter Baars, Chief of Jaggernaikpoeram, for reasons that they have for several consecutive years been extraordinarily vigilant, and are still vigilant, both in the sale and the collection of textiles, and among those especially the coarse varieties, in circumstances of the times when those assortments were written for with great emphasis from Batavia, in the expectation that such an advancement would not only have further effect on their zeal and vigilance, but also serve to stimulate the Chiefs of the other factories to emulation, for just as those who carelessly neglect the master's interest ought to be corrected, as an example, so is reward currently the only thing that on this Coast can serve as encouragement. nor also to grant the rank and salary of Junior Merchant to Jan Dumon, Second of Jaggernaikpoeram, on the grounds that, according to the said regulation at Batavia, the requested rank does not pertain to the aforementioned posts occupied by them, and no sufficient reasons have appeared to us, the Governor, to deviate in this matter from that regulation enacted by Your Nobilities themselves. Nor was the recommendation of their persons made prematurely, since Baars already arrived in the country as Junior Merchant in the year 1759, and Dumon was promoted there in Batavia to bookkeeper in 1757. And although it is specified in the establishment list that the Chief of Jaggernaikpoeram shall be a Junior Merchant, and the Second a bookkeeper, it is nevertheless believed, with submission to wiser judgment, that this only means that a Chief being placed there must be a Junior Merchant, and likewise regarding the Second, but that this does not imply that such a Junior Merchant and bookkeeper, after the expiration of ample time and the giving of satisfaction, could not be advanced further in their service, for then the condition of good and faithful servants, who are kept in their post out of necessity because they acquit themselves well, would be less favorable than that of others, who treat matters only tolerably and thus, as if indifferent whether they are in this or that office, are moved from one service to another, and thus from time to time obtain some advancement, while those of the first sort bend under their merits and remain the old and same servant. The Governor believes, in the hope of favorable interpretation, having had well-founded reasons to recommend the aforementioned Chiefs favorably to Their High Nobilities. Besides, the said Truter, having already departed this life on the 22nd of June of the past year, has thus not been able to enjoy the happiness of experiencing the favor that Your High Noble and Right Worshipful Lordships have been pleased to show him. If one further casts an eye upon the said establishment list, one will find that regarding the ranks for the Chiefs of Paliacatta and Sadras, the proposed determination has already been departed from more than once; with even more reason this will be able to occur regarding Jaggernaikpoeram, the condition of which has changed so considerably for the better since the drafting of the said list, for whereas Paliacatta and Sadras have decreased in profits, Jaggernaikpoeram has now for several consecutive years yielded over 300,000 guilders in profits, whereas in the said list only 138,000 guilders was mentioned; indeed, in that item, and no less in the delivery of textiles, Jaggernaikpoeram currently surpasses even the considerable Masulipatnam, where a Senior Merchant was stationed, which, not to speak of the ruinous times of war, even three years prior could not yield, on average, 130,000 guilders. The Governor humbly requests forgiveness for being so detailed regarding this post; it happens solely to show Your High Noble and Right Worshipful Lordships that in proposing the Junior Merchant Baars and bookkeeper Dumon he did not proceed thoughtlessly or prematurely, and also primarily to recommend the said persons further into the highly capable favor of Your High Noble and Right Worshipful Lordships through this ample demonstration, with the supplication that they will now be pleased to honor the said servants with the ranks of Merchant and Junior Merchant, if possible with their salary taking effect from the time when they were favorably recommended for the first time by Their High Nobilities, the Honorable High Indian Government, to Your High Noble and Right Worshipful Lordships. In continuation of what was transacted concerning the linen trade, we have the honor to inform Your High Nobilities that the received new requisition of cloth, both for the Fatherland and India, has been divided among this main office and the subordinate stations. And as far as this main place is concerned, having entered into negotiations with the merchants here, we closed the contracts at our session of 23 November last for the prices paid most recently, except for the 22 Caal fine bleached moorees required for Macassar, for which they were granted no more than 200 pagodas or 900 guilders for the bale of 100 pieces, instead of the 222 pagodas 12 fanams or 1001 guilders 5 stuivers paid for it in the year 1763. And of the required 1000 corges of tapestries, we have had half, or 500 corges, manufactured according to the samples received from Your High Nobilities, and the other half according to various samples and colored grounds, provided there is no white among them. Also on that day, because no demand was made this year for Cuddalore guinees, the merchants Teroumenij Chittij and Ramalinga Poele were ordered to deliver a quantity of 32 bales which had remained unfulfilled from the assignment on the now expired requisition, although the weavers already had the largest part thereof on the looms, but could not get them ready before the closing of the merchants' accounts, and these were discharged. While the four sample swatches for chintz received from Europe have been sent to Sadras and Palicol, for the reason that they cannot be made here as well and according to the intention of the Honorable High Respected Lords Gentlemen, and the directors have been instructed to have a part of the chintz required from there manufactured accordingly. Concerning the further contractings at the stations, we can as yet report nothing other than that at Palliacatta as well as Sadras, the contracting with the merchants has been concluded for the most recently paid prices. Meanwhile, the cancellation of the recently added increase, on which we have again earnestly pressed the directors conformable to the resolution taken at our session of 12 September last, was successful at Palicol, where the merchants have agreed to deliver the coarse fabric again for such prices as they enjoyed for it before the date of the granted increase. And at Jaggernaikpuram it is also on a good footing, though not yet decided. But at Bimilipatnam the directors were unable to persuade the merchants to any reduction; one must still exercise some patience with those insolvent fellows until their account with the Honorable Company is settled, at which time they will very easily be brought to a price reduction. However, we cannot pass over bringing to the attention of Your High Nobilities the remark of the Palicol merchants: that since the reduction of the increase of 6¼ percent on the coarse fabric granted to them had been so absolutely insisted upon and desired, they had therefore also consented to it, but they had to express their apprehension that they would thereby be rendered unable to fulfill the requisition assigned to them completely, and that indeed for these reasons: First, that because they were continually forced to take merchants' or silver rupees instead of the three-image pagodas contracted with them, which they saw very little, they were therefore subject to great loss. Secondly, that the English nation, having Armenians everywhere in the country and round about there, had the coarse guinees bought up through them at a much higher price than the Honorable Company paid for it, because of which the weavers much preferred to sell their goods to those Armenians than part with them to them. Thirdly, that by the dearness of the yarn due to the dear times which are now experienced there, the candy of paddy having already risen to 10¼ pagodas, both this and the price of the guinees increased more and more. And lastly, that because the requisitions consisted mostly of coarse fabric, the profits they made on the fine goods and the chintz were thereby entirely absorbed. Now, however much those presented reasons are nothing but truths, and we are fully convinced thereof, they have nevertheless not been able to move us to deviate from our resolution to curtail the aforementioned increase, but have left deferred to Your High Nobilities' revered disposition the request made by those merchants in the letter of the directors of 18 November last, for the aforementioned reduced 6¼ percent, or
