have arrived, only that which was dispatched according to the invoices has been taken from that office, for which reasons we cannot provide the usual returns and comparisons of this year's collection against the previous year from that office accurately. In fulfillment of the demanded 2495 packs, the collection this year at the Company's offices on this coast consists of a total of 2083 bales, of which 1682 are for Europe and 401 for India, which is 412 packs short, of which 356 bales are for the Homeland and 56 ditto for India. And in comparison with the previous year, 365 fewer packs have been gathered this year than the year before. Having let this precede, we take the liberty most humbly to note that we believe we have, with our submissive provisional reply dated 31 December of the past year, fully addressed everything relating to this now-completed demand, and at that time humbly demonstrated how the linens were divided among the offices; thus, to avoid repetition, we will respectfully abide by that, and now proceed to show how much each of the offices contributed to the collected quantity of linens this year; after having incorporated herein what the chiefs of the subordinate factories recorded in their respective replies to the demands, thereby beginning with the head place, Nagapatnam, where the merchants were charged with the delivery of 849 packs, namely 647 Pro Patria and 202 for India, against which 814 bales were fulfilled, namely 627 for Europe and 187 for India, thus a shortfall of 35 packs; of which 20 were for Europe and 15 for the Indian regions, which were also amply brought to the cloth hall by the merchants, yet owing to their poor quality fell into the rejected goods. Portonovo completely fulfilled the 228 bales assigned to that office, being 179 Pro Patria and 49 for the Indian regions. Sadraspatnam fulfilled 275 bales against the 330 packs assigned to that office, being 292 Pro Patria and 48 for India; of which 242 were for Europe and 33 for India, thus a shortfall of 65 packs, being 50 packs for the Netherlands and 15 ditto for India. The great drought, and the resulting dearness of provisions, on account of which the craftsmen sought their subsistence elsewhere, as well as the merchants bringing a large quantity of bad cloths to the cloth hall, which were unacceptable and rejected by the chiefs, were the cause of this. Regarding the cloths that we received this year from Coromandel directly with the ship Alkemade, we have seen that our orders to pay attention in the future to the proper length and width have been observed, so we shall not complain anew about this on this occasion, for which we would otherwise have had reason in this year. As to what effect the admonitions of the ministers to the subordinate servants will have, we cannot but await the outcome in the coming year. We let the findings of the examined main items, all received from Coromandel and brought directly here with Alkemade, follow directly: Fine Guinees 1st and 2nd sort: coarse and uneven, no better than last year. Common Guinees from Palicol: coarse and uneven, no better than last year. Above sorts from Bimilipatnam: 1st sort bad, of much less quality than previous years. From Jaggernaickpoeram: 1st sort and 2nd sort: does not satisfy at all, being a main matter for many years, are now only f 22 to f 24 and will run lower.

have caused the aforementioned shortfalls; nevertheless, the chiefs flatter themselves that their zeal and attention regarding the quality of the cloths will meet with your High Noble, High Respectable’s satisfaction. Palliacatta has delivered, against the 102 packs assigned to that office (namely: 82 for Europe, and 20 for India), for reasons as stated above, 44 packs acknowledged as fulfilled, whereof 24 packs Pro Patria, and 20 for India; and thus a deficit of 58 packs Pro Patria. Guinea 9 Caal from year to year worse and not to be used except for Palicol and ordinary coast Guineas; now fetches ƒ 18 to 19. If finer and more even, it would be worth much more, namely ƒ 25 to ƒ 26. Jaggernaikpoeram: ditto coarse from Palicol, 2nd sort, very bad, useless; the 3rd sort, and 3rd sort if good, would fetch ƒ 30 to ƒ 35. Fine Guinea, 2nd sort, Nagapatnam: being reasonably better, it was much more profitable. Because of the bad quality, worse since. Since, as stated hereinbefore, the answered demands have not yet been received, we can note nothing concerning them with certainty; likewise, we are unable on this occasion to return the requested samples, which were sent to that office alongside this demand, as they have also not been received. Of good quality, it would fetch ƒ 15 to 16. Palicol, on the 279 packs assigned to that office (namely: 228 Pro Patria, and 51 for India), Guinea from Jaggernaikpoeram, not like the 1st sort, 2nd sort in all respects and the same case, is not worth ƒ 9; thin, with holes, short, narrow, sparse, uneven; not to be used for printing; will now have to be sold even lower, having only fetched ƒ 10 ½ to ƒ 10 4/16; worse than last year. Guineas: to fulfill 210 packs, whereof 172 for Europe, and 38 for India, and thus short 69 bales, namely 56 for Europe, and 13 for India. The chiefs submit in their defense that these unfulfilled piece-goods are to be ascribed, on the one hand, to the vexations of the English, especially by the English chief Mr. Patter at Ingeram, who forbids the weavers from working for our merchants, and even if they still make cloths, it must be done and delivered covertly; and on the other hand, to the lack of zeal of the debt-laden merchants, who always fail to deliver the quantity assigned to them in good, merchantable cloths. The above 3 sorts of Coast Guineas will now fetch little; if the qualities were satisfactory, they could be sold off in parcels with much profit for the Company. It is a principal article. Guineas from Bimilipatnam, the ordinary sort, 1st and 2nd sort: somewhat better than the previous sorts, but worse than it has been up to now. These offices ought also to be written off unless the qualities improve from year to year. Salempores from Palicol and Jaggernaikpoeram are like the Guineas, but slightly better. Another and the same bale of Salempores, 18 punjam, Palicol: likewise less from year to year, and in all respects entirely like the Guinea cloths of these offices, Palicol and Jaggernaikpoeram and Bimilipatnam, and also very unevenly sorted; one piece is ƒ 4 to ƒ 5 better than the other. That from Palicol is so poor that the packaging is better than many pieces that are in the bale; besides also the unevenness of width in one and the same piece, and that the pieces were also found to be shorter than usual in ell measure, whereas some pieces of the guinea cloth measured only 44 to 45 ells, and of the salempores 19 to 20 ells, which ought to be of 50 and 21½ to 22 ells, as we have always requested them, and as they are also noted on the packing notes of the guinea cloth and salempores. That from Bimilipatnam, which was found very coarse and heavy, ought to be finer threaded and not so heavily starched; one must also try to procure a whiter bleach for this sort. For our competitors the English, who are presently masters not only of the entire extent of this coast, but also principally of the places and provinces where the linens are manufactured, make use of their mastery over the weavers, who may not deliver any linens to us before and until their Company, nay even private individuals, have been satisfied; to that end the headmen and sepoys in the villages must take care that the weaver leaves no piece of linen to others before they no longer require anything, and we fear that these vexations will increase rapidly from year to year. It is also on that account that they are able to obtain good linens sooner than we; over and above that, their linens are not burdened with washing wages and charges on merchandise, for those are written off against their revenues which they draw from the lands. With respect to the colored goods, we continue to dispatch our continuous orders to the chiefs of the stations Palliakatta and Iaggernaikpoeram, with insistence strictly to carry out your Right Honorable, highly esteemed orders, whilst we have not failed to send also the swatches of the bethilles sestergantij to the aforementioned chiefs for compliance as soon as we received them via Ceylon, along with the orders relating thereto. To manufacture the under-breeches ginghams, we have sent out strict orders, and now renewed them, ensuring that the same shall be fulfilled in a good quality according to the patterns; likewise we have insisted anew upon an improvement in the colored goods. After the departure of the return ship, various bales generally remain lying over at almost all trading stations, as appears from our formal answered demand, being caused partly because they could not be loaded into the said return vessel, and partly because they only come in after its departure; therefore they remain lying over until the coming year, from which arises the diverse dates of the packing slips. The contracted chintzes shall be worked to a proper ell measurement and according to handsome, well-chosen designs. Concerning the fact that the Palliacatta colored goods are more expensive than those of Iaggernaikpoelram, this arises from the following cause: That the contracting at Palliacatta takes place in new Nagapatnam pagodas with 8 per cent agio, or so-called old pagodas, which is the standard coin of the Honorable Company. The colored goods fall in the so-called Bay of Mazulipatnam, lying south of Iaggernaikpoeram and north of Palliacatta, in which district no other coin is current than Madraspatnam three-image pagodas, in which the contracting must take place; therefore a Palliacatta merchant is compelled to exchange the Company's old pagodas at a loss of 9 to 10 and sometimes more per cent into three-image Madraspatnam pagodas, whereas on the contrary the Iaggernaikpoeram merchants receive three-image pagodas minted at this head office for that collection, or else merchandise, which they can turn over in those places or at Mazulipatnam with a slight difference, for which the Palliacatta traders have no opportunity; thus it follows from this that the Palliacatta merchant charges the exchange loss to his linens. One could ask, why are the Palliacatta merchants not also provided with Nagapatnam three-image pagodas for that collection? To which serves in answer, that this would give a footing to those traders to also claim that coin for the colored goods that are actually collected at Palliacatta, to a noticeable disadvantage of the Honorable Company; for three-image Nagapatnam pagodas lose 1 3/4 per cent roughly upon reminting, and new Nagapatnam with 8 per cent agio, or old ones, yield a profit of 3 per cent upon reminting, which already makes a considerable difference; besides and apart from the difference of the money, the Palliacatta merchants are also obliged to dispatch slengen or small native vessels for the collection of the goods, which run into much freight and expenses and must be borne by the merchants, which therefore also is charged to the goods; whereas on the contrary the Company keeps at the Iaggernaikpoeram office three thonijs or small vessels, which are used solely for the collection of the sewn goods, so that the goods the English obtain from Coromandel are so superior in quality that for the same kind of good, by virtue of the much better quality than ours, they demand 15 to 17 guilders apiece, whereas we obtain only 10 to 11 guilders, which makes a difference of about 50 per cent. This year we shall indeed demand a higher price, but the improved price is not caused by the better quality of our goods, but by a smaller supply in Europe generally taken. The colored cloths from Northern Coromandel are very coarse in all sorts; to give Your Honor proof thereof, we send Your Honor three patterns of the Bethilles Testergamtie as samples, namely: Number 1: A pattern such as we have received in previous years. 2: A pattern of the sort received with this return by the Ionge Lieve. 3: A pattern of the sort that the English bring. From this the ministers can judge whether our complaints are well-founded or not. Among the private goods brought in, we have found the Roemaals Sestergantie of such checks and corners for handkerchiefs as we have already requested in those years and have sent samples thereof. We give Your Honor provisional notice thereof, because among the parcels that were sent from Your Honor with Vreedelust to Batavia and destined hither, there could possibly be some of this sort of good. Otherwise, this can give us just as little satisfaction in due course as the under-breeches ginghams, since that which private individuals can bring over to their particular advantage ought also to be able to be done for the account of the Company, especially when we not only issue the necessary orders for this, but also furnish Your Honor with the required samples etcetera in due time. The colors of the colored linens are better than those of previous years, but on the other hand, as aforementioned, much coarser of thread; also the corners of the handkerchiefs are not right square, a proof of bad weaving. While examining the cloths of Northern Coromandel, we have found many packing slips dated 1771, 1772, and 1773. This makes us think that one cannot consider them as having been dispatched precisely in fulfillment of our placed demand, and from which one can also more easily understand how it happens that we continually receive the goods with the old defects.
